YOGA FAQs

1. What does Hatha mean?

Hatha is a generic term that has come to denote all styles of physical yoga. Most styles of hatha yoga include breath work (pranayama) and meditation techniques in addition to physical exercises known as asanas or postures.

2. How many times per week should I practice?

The more time spent on yoga, the greater the benefits. Most yoga classes last between 60-90 minutes. If you can, start your practice with three sessions a week. Regular practice is the key to receiving all of yoga's benefits, but build your practice up slowly.

3. Do I need to be on a vegetarian diet to benefit from yoga?

You can benefit from yoga without having to turn into a vegetarian. However, for the most complete yoga experience, a vegetarian diet is preferred. Vegetarian foods are said to calm the mind and sharpen the intellect. The choice remains yours.

4. How is yoga different from stretching or other kinds of fitness?

While traditional forms of exercise are goal oriented, yoga by contrast is a process. Physical practice is just one aspect of yoga. Yoga exercises the body, makes you aware of your breath and helps the mind to concentrate. Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward and makes us more aware of our bodies.

5. Is Yoga for everyone? What if I'm stiff and out of shape?

Yoga classes vary greatly in levels of difficulty with students ranging from complete novices to seasoned yogis. Find the right level for yourself and you will find that yoga will help you become more flexible.

6. Can I do yoga at home?

As with anything new, it is preferable to learn the asanas under the guidance of a teacher. Certain asanas if performed incorrectly may damage your body. Learn the poses correctly with a teacher before you move onto following a book or a video.

7. Is yoga a religion?

No. It's a philosophy that is nearly 5,000 years old. It is a practical approach to healthy living based on a philosophy that mind, body and spirit are one. However yoga is connected to the Hindu and Buddhist beliefs of karma. You can practice yoga without conflict with your own religious beliefs.

8. Are yoga classes safe?

Yoga classes are generally safe. However, you need to make sure that you practice with an experienced or certified teacher. Like with any other physical activity, yoga can be harmful if performed incorrectly. It is important to choose your level of yoga correctly. Straining your body beyond its capabilities can seriously damage you.

9. Will doing yoga help me lose weight?

That depends on how frequently you do yoga, the type of yoga you do and what you eat. Certain vigorous yoga practices like Ashtanga and Bikram yoga can help you lose weight. What yoga will do is help tone your muscles, improve your posture and give you a general sense of well-being.

10. How do I pick a type of yoga and get started?

Do your homework before choosing a particular style. Read up about the different styles and sample a few classes before deciding which one suits you. The most important thing is to find a good teacher and the level of yoga you feel most comfortable doing.
