Ashtanga Yoga

This style of yoga is physically demanding and appeals to those looking for a strong challenging practice. Created by Pattabhi Jois, who studied under T Krishnamacharya at the first Hatha Yoga school in the 1920s, Ashtanga involves working through demanding Vinyasas (a series of postures) with loud Ujjayi breathing, moving from one pose to another to build heat, strength, stamina and flexibility.

The purpose of Vinyasa is to create heat in the body, which leads to purification through increased circulation and sweating. It also improves flexibility which allows the student to practice advanced Asanas (poses) with less risk of injury.

Ashtanga is made up of 3 distinct series, each progressively difficult. The first, or primary, series consists of about 75 poses and takes approximately an hour and a half to complete. The second series is only introduced when the primary series is strong. It follows the same progression (sun salutations, standing, sitting etc.) but introduces new poses and variations. The third series is only recommended for advanced practitioners.

Who is Ashtanga for?

Ashtanga yoga is extremely popular. It is a vigorous, athletic style of yoga and appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently.
