Yin Yoga
Yin Yoga, sometimes referred to as Restorative Yoga, targets the connective tissues, such as the ligaments, bones, and also the joints of the body that normally are not exercised very much in a more active style of asana practice.
Suitable for all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (yang) styles of yoga that emphasize internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.
This style of yoga is much slower paced than most other styles and may seem boring, passive or soft. However, a yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the postures which can be held for between one to twenty minutes. Floor postures and inversion postures usually make up a large part of the class structure. Props, such as blocks, bolsters and blankets are also commonly used.
It is advisable to wear warm clothes as this style does not actively build heat in the body.
Who is Yin yoga for?
Yin yoga is a great complimentary practice to strong Yang practices, and is also suitable for those looking for a restorative practice.
